Surrounded by coral reefs, home to an abundance of marine life, Mauritius is the perfect place to enjoy a variety of sea activities. Most sea activities in Mauritius take place within the calmer waters of the coastal lagoons. The corals reefs which surround the majority of the island (with the exception of parts of the South coast) act to create a shallow, calmer lagoon, perfect for swimming, snorkelling, and a variety of water activities, including speedboat tours, swimming with wild dolphins, snorkeling with turtles and much more. Other activities, such as scuba diving and whale wWatching, take place in the deeper waters, outside of the lagoon.
Apart from being the perfect place to swim and snorkel, the fragile lagoons which surround Mauritius are also teeming with sea life. Wild dolphins, Green and Hawksbill turtles, tropical fish, crustaceans, as well as a variety of flora, including mangroves in some areas, make their home in these lagoons. Rivers, such as the Tamarin River, which empty into the lagoons, create a unique environment for marine life, where fresh and salt water meet.
