Whale watching in Mauritius is experienced in the open seas, outside of the lagoon (unlike swimming with wild dolphins). For this reason, larger, more powerful boats are used, and sea conditions become more of a factor. Between July and November, Humpback whales make their way from the cold Antarctic waters, to the warner waters close to the equator. These Humpback whales then give birth and breed before heading back to the colder waters. Humpback whales are typically observed between July and November, and Sperm whales can be seen throughout the year. Humpback whales range in length between 12m and 16m and weigh up to 35,000 kg, while Sperm whales are similar in length, but typically weigh between 35,000 and 50,000 kg.

Whales can be seen throughout the day, and there is about a 60% or 70% chance of seeing whales on any given day. . For many, seeing these majestic creates in the wild is a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience.
