The Top Land Tours in Mauritius

Despite being only 60km x 40km at its longest and widest points, Mauritius is packed with amazing attractions, sites and scenery outside of your resort. A trip to Mauritius wouldn’t be complete without exploring the island with a Mauritius land tour!

So, what are the most popular Mauritius attractions, and which Mauritius land tours take you there?

The Classics

The North, South and Southwest tours are the staples of Mauritian land tours. As you’d imagine, each of these tours covers a respective geographical area of the island. While there are beautiful beaches along the East coast of the island, it isn’t packed with attractions like the other areas. However, the South Tour does cover part of the southeast of Mauritius.

Some of the highlights of the Mauritius North Day Tour include Pamplemousses Botanical Garden, L’Aventure du Sucre Museum, Château de Labourdonnais Colonial Mansion and the capital of Port Louis. Both Pamplemousses Botanical Garden, and especially Port Louis, are absolute must-sees. The Mauritius South Tour focuses on the rugged South of the island with the highlights being Bois Cheri Tea Plantation, La Vanille Nature Reserve and the coastal viewpoint of Gris Gris. La Vanille Nature Reserve is an amazing place to learn about the flora and fauna of Mauritius, and the views of the waves crashing on the shore at Gris Gris are spectacular! The Southwest Tour highlights include Trou aux Cerfs Extinct Volcano, Grand Bassin Sacred Lake, Black River Gorge National Park and the famous Chamarel 7-Coloured Earth. All of these sites are spectacular. If you’re only going to do one Mauritius land tour, we’d recommend the Southwest Tour!

If you’re interested in doing more than one of the classic Mauritius land tours, we’d recommend booking a Mauritius Essentials 3-Day Tour (with an optional wild dolphin swim), or the Mauritius Highlights 2-Day Tour, which packs the majority of the attractions in the three tours into two, 10-hour days (for those who have limited time).

Something a Little Different

Apart from the classic Mauritius Land Tours, there are some unique options, depending on your interests. The highlight of the Eco Tour is the Ile aux Aigrettes Nature Reserve, where you can enjoy a tour led by the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation, explaining the unique flora and fauna endemic to the island. The Adventure Tour is an alternative to the South Day Tour, and travellers will have the opportunity to enjoy the many activities offered at La Vallée des Couleurs Nature Park, including quad biking, zip lining, jeep tours, buggy rides, trekking and suspension bridge walking. The Beach Hopping Tour explores four spectacular beaches in the North of the island, and is great for those not staying in the North. The Shopping Tour is great for those looking to make a few purchases before going home, and travellers will have the chance to visit the Port Louis outdoor market, as well as the famous Caudan Waterfront in Port Louis.
