Discover the History of Sugar in Mauritius
During our private North Day Tour, one of the Mauritius attractions you will have the opportunity to visit is the sugar museum, also known as L’Aventure du Sucre. Located in an old sugar factory in the northern village of Pamplemousses, this museum is quickly becoming one of the most popular places to visit in Mauritius. It takes about one and a half to two hours to complete the ‘sugar trail’ inside the Beau Plan mill but we know clients who wish they had en entire day to spend there!
The trail’s laid out in such a way that you feel like you’re walking through the history of Mauritius, starting with the discovery of the island, the early settlements, the slave trade, the arrival of the indentured labourers, life on the colony and the independence of Mauritius, followed by its recent history.
Both adults and children will love the many exhibits on the history and manufacturing of sugar, with enormous cylinders, evaporators, blenders, turbines, vacuum pans and other big old machines on display.
Visitors will get to discover the different types and uses of sugar and try a variety of unrefined sugars. If you love baking, you will love the rich flavours of these sugars, which are so much more delicious than the regular ones we buy at the grocery stores.
For the adults, the tour ends with a complimentary rum tasting. You can try various sugar rums, spiced/aged rums and flavoured rums. Our personal recommendations are the honey, vanilla and coffee flavoured liqueurs, my favourite being the honey!
