Mauritian Culture and Festivals: Ganesh Chaturthi
Mauritius is known for its rich cultural heritage and its public holidays reflect this diversity. On 18 September this year, Mauritians of the Hindu faith will be celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi, the birth of the Hindu god Ganesha, who is considered as the remover of all obstacles.
You can partake in the festivities by visiting the temples where locals chant prayers in lord Ganesha’s honour or you can follow the colourful and musical procession, during which devotees carry a statue of the god through the different villages to finally immerse it in the ocean or river.
